Wind Tunnel Training Before Your AFF Course:
Take off Prepared!
In the past, learning to skydive meant just jumping out and hoping your body and mind would cooperate. Today, we’re smarter—thanks to wind tunnels.
Instead of immediately going up to 13,000 feet, you can now first practice in an environment with steady airflow, an instructor by your side, and a floor close beneath you.
What is a Wind Tunnel?
A wind tunnel is a vertical tube with a powerful airflow. You lie down in it, and the airflow lifts you up—just like during freefall. But without an airplane, without the jump, and without the stress. It’s perfect for teaching your body what “flying” really feels like.
Why Train in a Tunnel Before Your AFF?
- You get used to the sensation: Jumping can be intense. But if you’ve already experienced the “falling sensation” in the tunnel, it’s far less overwhelming.
- You receive immediate feedback: Instructors are right next to you, guiding, adjusting, and correcting your body position on the spot.
- You learn faster: People who have a tunnel session before their AFF course often pick up techniques much quicker.
- You build confidence: Because you’ve already experienced “flying,” you know your capabilities. You’ll feel this during your actual skydive.
- You train safely: Making mistakes is encouraged. In the tunnel, it’s safe, and you learn from them.
Wind tunnel training greatly accelerates your learning process. Many beginners immediately notice the difference during their first jumps.
The Sport is Evolving – And That’s a Good Thing
Skydiving has come a long way. Previously, achieving stability during your first jumps was mostly trial-and-error in freefall.
With wind tunnel training, it’s now easier to practice essential body positions and techniques beforehand. This makes the sport more accessible, safer, and more effective—for beginners and experienced skydivers alike. Of course, you can learn skydiving without tunnel training, but the tunnel provides an extra boost in confidence and technique.
And it’s fun, too.
This is what your first wind tunnel session looks like:
Where Can You Fly?
In the Netherlands, you can visit:
Indoor Skydive Roosendaal
City Skydive Utrecht
In Belgium, there are tunnels in:
Charleroi
Liège
Make sure to mention you’re preparing for an AFF course—they’ll tailor their instruction and exercises specifically to support your first real skydive.
Ready to Learn to Fly?
Wind tunnel training isn’t mandatory, but it sure helps.
If you want to enter the plane feeling confident and comfortable with the basics—start here. Your mind will be calmer. Your body will remember. And you’ll have a head start.
