5 myths about skydiving
Last updated: 9 December 2025
The bottom line:
Skydiving is safer, more accessible and mentally calmer than most people think. In this blog we debunk five common myths and show why learning to skydive is more within reach than you might expect.
- Skydiving is not more dangerous than many other adventure sports; the training is professional and focused on safety.
- You do not have to be a daredevil: skydiving is also about focus, calm and personal growth.
- With the right guidance, learning to skydive is surprisingly accessible, including for you.
What people think… and what skydiving really is

Tell people you want to start skydiving and the well-meant advice, half-truths and clichés start flying around. But skydiving today is something completely different from what many people imagine.
In this blog we break down five persistent myths about skydiving and show why jumping out of an aircraft is surprisingly accessible, safe and educational.
1. Skydiving is extremely dangerous
This is by far the myth we hear most often. Of course, a jump is not a game of chess, but modern skydiving is extremely well regulated.
Airboss is affiliated with the KNVvL (Royal Dutch Aviation Association) and operates within strict safety guidelines.
You jump with inspected equipment, automatic activation devices and certified instructors. Statistically, skydiving belongs to the safer adventure sports, especially when you jump with a recognised organisation that offers professional guidance.
2. You have to be an adrenaline junkie
Not at all. Most of our participants are simply curious, want to push a boundary or are actually looking for peace and focus.
Skydiving is just as much a mental experience as a physical one.
Many people are surprised by the calm and sense of control they feel during freefall.
3. I am too old / too heavy / too inexperienced
Our courses are open to people between 18 and 55 years old with an average level of fitness.
We look at your overall condition, not just age or weight. And experience? You do not need any.
During the course we guide you step by step towards your first jumps.
4. After your first jump you are immediately solo
If only it were that simple. During the Accelerated Freefall (AFF) course, you first jump with two instructors flying right next to you.
You build things up step by step until you are truly ready to go solo.
Only then do you jump completely on your own, in every sense of the word.
5. Skydiving is something you do only once in your life
For some people one jump is enough. But many of our participants actually fall in love with the feeling of freedom.
They continue on towards their A licence, return every year to France, or discover new heights on a skydiving holiday in Morocco.
